Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are all newcomers to this wonderful country. (Less than two years in the U.S.) 70% speak Spanish and 30% speak Mayan languages like Mam and Poqomchi. They are eager to perfect their English and they soak up vocabulary and grammar like sponges.
What a gift it is to be able to contribute to the education of these newcomer students.
Having a classroom filled with pictures, books, and fun supplies eases their transition to the American School System.
Our newcomer students are in three primary groups here. One group is 2nd and 3rd graders, one group is 4-6th graders, and the final group are the more advanced second year students of multiple grade levels. We are the first and only newcomer class in our district of 30,000 students and we hope that this much needed program will expand over the years. But we need you.
My Project
My second year Newcomers are quickly outgrowing the very basic phonics books that I use to teach them English. These books I'm requesting, with their lively characters and vivid illustrations, are perfect as we transition into the world of English literacy. Each story has clear characters, settings, problems, and solutions, which are the basis for basic comprehension. We will explore vocabulary words as we read each page for the first time and then reread the books several times afterwards for fluency practice. They will also be able to write brief summaries of these stories in English. And because the Berenstain Bears series has so many titles, they will also be motivated to check out individual books from our school library.
