My students need new mallets for our Orff Instruments! Our current mallets are falling apart. New mallets will allow the students to be more successful when playing.
The students at our PreK-5th Grade elementary school have a wide variety of backgrounds. They come to school ready to learn, and when they get to the music room, they are ready to make music! However, a lot of the resources at this school are older and starting to need to be replaced, including the instruments in our music room.
All students in Kinder-5th grade get to attend one 50 minute music class a week.
They love to make the most of their time in music with active music making! To do that we need more resources. My students love to sing, move and play instruments.
We are a Title 1, Tier 2 school, with approximately 71% of our students qualifying for free and reduced breakfast/lunch. Our transiency rate is around 37%.
My Project
My students want to play instruments every day they come to music class. My students treat our instruments carefully and with respect. Most of our mallets are older than the students. They are so old that the yarn is fraying and coming off. Some of the mallets are missing handles, making them hard to hold correctly. More mallets in the music room will also allow students to practice correct mallet technique, even if they aren't actually playing an instrument! Many times, students can take turns and share an instrument, however if we had more mallets, they could practice holding them even when their partner was the one actually playing.
With new mallets, my students will be able to hold the mallets correctly, and concentrate on making beautiful music together.
When students have properly working resources, they become so much more successful. I know my students will take a great sense of pride in learning to use our resources appropriately and show that they can become true musicians!
