My Students

My students are creative, thoughtful and full of energy! They absolutely love hands-on, active, engaging activities and challenges that allow them to think outside the box and to find different ways of expressing themselves. They come into our learning environment each day ready to try new things and take brave chances in order to grow as musicians.

My Project

My elementary music department believes early musical concepts are learned through singing, chanting, dance, movement, and the playing of percussion instruments. Improvisation, composition and a child's natural sense of play are encouraged through the use of props, drums and other percussion instruments such as xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels. These learned concepts become springboards for further creative pursuits such as improvisation or composing their own music. These experiences also reinforce other classroom skills such as reading and math. Right now our classroom has 9 xylophones. If we had 9 to 12 more xylophones, each student could be actively involved in this mallet experience at the same time. Their skills and love for music would grow with greater opportunities for hands-on playing. This is a worthwhile investment because the entire school, 400 students, will have use of these for decades to come.
