This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We are a Title 1 school and 95% of the students qualify free/ reduced meals. We have a student population of 1,200 students, which consists of 80% African Americans, 10% Whites, and approximately 10% of the population is from other countries. Our school is a career-orientated school. We do our best to include all of our students no matter where they are from or what their skill levels are. Being a special education teacher, I assist those students who have special needs to be successful in what career options they choose. I have approximately 10 students that I teach American Literature & Composition. These students have a wide range of learning disabilities, from Learning Disabled to Autism. These seniors deserve a great send off into the world.
My Project
My students need 20 copies of the novel "The Autobiography of Malcolm X", and the DVD. Along with the book we will have activities, worksheets, writing prompts and then watch the DVD.
This novel "The autobiography of Malcolm X", along with the DVD, will be third set of novels in our classroom library.
My goal is to enrich my students lives by checking out the life of Malcolm X. This book is in a different format, in which I am hoping to catch the interest in my Special Education classrooms. I have found that having things that stay in our classroom gives the students a sense of control and ownership.
