I am an Exceptional Children's Teacher in a diverse Urban elementary school. The students that I serve are in grades 3-5. My students come to the resource room daily for services in the areas of reading, writing, math, and/or social skills. The diversity of our school stretches across both ethnic and economic lines. Our school is a neighborhood school with a large number of students who walk to school. There are a significant number of students at our school who receive free or reduce lunch.
My students need an evidence based writing program (along with mentor texts, and writing tools) to increase their writing skills in the small group setting. By incorporating the 6 + 1 Traits of Writing program, along with mentor texts, flexible seating, and fun writing tools, my students will have access to content that allows them to grow as writers. Many of my students find writing to be a daunting (least preferred) task, and with the use of markers and post it tape (as opposed to pencils), students will have the opportunity to use creativity to write/sketch stories around the classroom using flexible seating.
The 6 + 1 Traits of Writing Program is a highly respected tool for evaluating student writing and planning instruction.
The mentor texts will be used alongside instruction as an exemplar to inspire students in their own writing.
