Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have 400 curious minds that come into my classroom, each week, ready to learn about art: both the history and the practice of making it. The students I have are in a wide range of ages 5-14 and grades kindergarten through 8th. For some of my students, this is the first year they have attended my art class, and they are eager to participate! For others, this is another year for them to learn and experience new things. My students are bright and energetic, with creative minds that shock me sometimes, with the great ideas they come up with. Many of the children I teach have a very hard home life, their parents are both working two to three jobs to scrape by, they are homeless, or they come from a broken family. The goal of my classroom is that no matter where they come from, or what is going on outside of school, the students have the same opportunities and materials as students in the schools around here. It can be hard at times, but with the support of people like you, I am able to give these students an amazing art class each year.
My Project
I have a number of Polynesian students who are very proud of where they are from. I would like for the student to create traditional Hawaiian instruments and then learn to play them in music class as the student play and (fingers crossed) sing, students from a younger grade will be dancing.
We hope to get our whole community involved in making the instruments and teaching the students to dance.
The student will use the gourds to make ipu instruments. They are a type of drum. The students will start by scrubbing their gourds to clean the outside. The students will then cut the gourd with a saw and clean them out using the scrubbers and back scratchers. Then they will create a handle so that they can keep hold of the gourd while dancing. When the instrument has been made the students will decorate the outside of it in a traditional design.
I hope making the ipu will help connect some students to their culture and teach others something new.
