Help me give my students dry erase tables for my students to work out their math problems!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
New Haven, CT is a high poverty inner-city where most of our students fall far below the poverty line. My school is a Title I school in New Haven, CT where all children are eligible for free breakfast and lunch every day. The majority of the careers these students will have available to them will be STEM related. In order to properly prepare these students for these careers, my students need to become fully engaged in their mathematics education as well as be able to collaborate with others.
In an effort to promote student engagement and collaboration in the classroom, I am seeking marker board top tables.
The tables will be utilized by my students in the classroom to work on basic math problems all the way to in depth projects. My students love to work in groups, be able to move around, and share any and all of their ideas. I believe that the immediacy of being able to write down ideas quickly and receive teacher feedback almost instantly will keep students, who might normally be disengaged, on task at all times.
Teaching math is a team effort. I believe that I learn as much from my students, if not more, as they learn from me. The way that students think through problems and process information is unique to each individual student.
Through the use of the marker board top tables, students will be able to demonstrate their learning and think through problems collaboratively as a group.
This small change can have a big impact, by creating writable work spaces, students are more likely to try a problem and take a chance at being incorrect, rather than not trying at all.
In my classroom, these tables will not just be furniture, but rather a valuable tool for students to utilize in their daily learning, the same way they rely on technology and other school essentials.
