Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Living within a stone's throw of New York City, the students of my class try to take advantage of every opportunity to overcome the hardships they face in the community. With a student body population that is ninety percent dependent upon free or reduced price lunch, the effort that each student puts forth only helps to inspire the emotions of staff and students alike. They are a resourceful group that tries as hard as they can to please their teachers, please their parents and push themselves for bigger and better futures. As we often talk about in class, they can't always be the best but they can always give their best.
My Project
As great as it is to be living so close to the bright lights and glamour of New York City, the unfortunate reality is that most of our students do not understand the true power that economics posses. My project attempts to bring together a better understanding of the word 'finance' through the use of reading materials and a variety of stock market based games.
The majority of my students have spent the majority of their lives living below the poverty line - with little understanding on how to rise above it.
By providing them with appropriately leveled readings and engaging them with investment and entrepreneurial based games, students can see that life does not have to remain on the same economic level. More importantly, by allowing the students to practice what they are learning, they can bring that comprehension out into the 'real world' upon graduating from our school.
