Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are growing up in a community filled with gang violence and pressures with low incomes and limited opportunities for higher level education. I teach 7th grade language arts, striving to teach literature that promote global awareness and real-world skills.
Dr. Mortenson's memoir promotes the idea of education being the path to a peaceful and successful life. It also fits nicely into our team's goals of providing cultural experiences for our students that increase their awareness of the world and the opportunities it holds for them. However, we have a very tight budget. The cost of books adds up, and we do not have the resources this year to purchase the class set of books.
I teach two different classes. One is advanced skills. These students have high reading levels, and this book would both engage and challenge them. My other class is an on-grade level class and the young reader's edition would allow them to study the same story and lessons but at their own appropriate level.
This memoir will allow students to see that one individual can make a difference in this world. It will actively engage them in reading. It will also provide a beautiful look at a part of the world so many of them only consider in terms of war and violence.
Your help will provide the rigor and relevance to my classroom curriculum that I work daily to provide for them.
