This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Welcome to the 21st century...now step into my 20th century classroom. Grr. With all the incredible learning based websites available to students today, including ones that our district requires us to log into, why is it that my students are only able to access these for one hour every other week?
I have twenty-three budding fourth graders who want nothing more than to be like every other kid.
They want (and NEED) the ability to access technology to help improve their reading, math, and English skills. Only two of my students have internet access at home...just doesn't seem right in this day and age, does it?
That's what happens when you're a low income school. ALL my students are on the free/reduced lunch program. ALL my students are learning English as a second language. Three of my kids are special education students on top of all these other struggles!
We currently only have access to our computer lab for one hour once every two weeks. Even then, many of the websites we try accessing won't work on our older system computers. And the computers in my classroom are even in worse shape.
My Project
I need to prepare my students for the future, and that means giving them more access to computers and acquiring computer skills and knowledge. Having these HP computers as a resource in my classroom would benefit them in so many ways.
First, it will help them understand how quickly technology is growing, and the importance of becoming computer saavy.
Second, it will give them access to the incredible learning websites that they need to be accessing DAILY, not just twice a month.
And lastly, it will give them the opportunity to be lifelong learners...to have the world at their fingertips, and to feel like most other students their age across the United States.
Can you imagine your day to day life without having access to your computer?
Not having the ability to check the latest news headlines, not being able to look up something at a moment's notice? Our lives today include the necessity of the ability to access computers...why should my students be any different?
