Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in Phoenix, AZ, at a Title I school that services students who often struggle with language barriers. Ninety-nine percent of students at my school are eligible for free/reduced-price lunches. Many times, students come to school in uniforms that are ill-fitting, dirty and have been worn so often, that they are almost falling apart. It would be easy for these students to feel cheated by a school system that does not understand the struggles that they face daily.
In my classroom, we collaborate, we work hard, we push past struggles, and we challenge ourselves to be greater than we were when we started the day.
This is not always easy. There are kids of all reading levels and abilities in my classroom. Sometimes, we make mistakes. However, we do not give up in my classroom. We learn from our mistakes so that we do not make them again. We help each other. We recognize and accept our differences. Most importantly, we appreciate all the different skills, mindsets, and ideas that the people in our class bring to the table.
My Project
The last year has really shown both teachers and students how incredible technology can be in the classroom. Our Chromebooks are such a valuable tool that we use on a daily basis. One of the things my students really need in order to get the most from their technology would be earbuds. I would love to be able to make sure that students across the grade level have earbuds to use during testing or whenever they are using their technology.
Covid has made our schools hyper aware of germs and we have done what we can to make sure that students have their own materials that they don't have to share.
That's where the second part of this project comes in to play. Having a sticker maker (and the subsequent refill) will allow me to create labels for student's materials. I would really love to be able to create personalized name stickers that students can use to mark their supplies to avoid cross-contamination. This would keep student supplies from being misplaced or borrowed.
