Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are an amazing group of kids in grades Kindergarten-5! A majority of the students at my school are English Language Learners and on free and reduced lunch. Despite these socio-economic hardships these students come to the library daily excited to read, learn, interact and explore. I strive is to provide a safe, comfortable environment for these amazing students. I want to give them access to the newest books and technology so they can stay competitive in future years.
My Project
Librarians are faced with many challenges when making design decisions in their libraries. There is usually an emphasis on natural light and bright open spaces, but what about the furniture? Our library has tables and chairs, but we need Bean Bags chairs to really get the kids to settle down, pick up a book and read.
Many people see libraries as dusty, old places full of strict rules and boring tables.
I believe that getting kids into the library with bright, vibrant decorations and making the library a comfortable place to stay and hang out will engage more students. An academic library will happen if students feel comfortable going to the library and learning to just "hang out."
