I am a third grade teacher in a high poverty/low-income school district. In the past five years I've had students who face challenges every day. Some of them come to school hungry because they haven't eaten since lunch yesterday. I have students who have a parent in prison. I have had students who have seen things that no child should ever see.
Despite all of this, they come to school with kind hearts and motivated attitudes.
Because of the challenges they face I am looking for way to motivate and encourage them while they are in school. My students come to school each and every day ready to learn and do their absolute best.
My Project
My third grade students will be taking standardized in the upcoming months. The headphones will allow them to tune out surrounding noise so that they can fully focus on the test. Students who struggle to read will use the headphones to listen to the test. The other items will be used as motivation for them to do their best during the testing windows.
Giving low-income students access to motivational items will help them to be successful during the testing that is to come.
My goal is for each student to have a motivational pencil pouch for testing. In each pouch will be a brand new sharpened pencil with a motivational statement (ex. good work), a smiley face eraser (to represent that I'm proud of them), a stylus (so that they can better use the iPads to take their tests), a high-five eraser (so the know I believe in them), a bookmark (to use in the book they read after testing), Any donations that you can give will be greatly appreciated by my students!
