This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have the most amazing class in the world! My students come from an economically disadvantaged area. They come to school every day eager and ready to learn. My students face so many challenges, it is amazing that they can even make it to school. They have seen and experienced things that no child should have to go through.
Our classroom is a place where the students feel loved and safe.
I try my best every day to make the lessons exciting and engaging. Unfortunately, we do not have many supplies and we definitely don't get extras. Many students come from broken homes and some do not even live with their parents.
I have been teaching for 13 years and this is by far one of my favorite classes. I wish I could give them everything that they need, but I am not in a position to do that. I want my kids to succeed and have the best chance they can.
My Project
My students will benefit greatly from the novel in this project. It will give them a chance to read something that is interesting to them and to put the skills they have learned this year into practice. The guides that I asked for to go with the novels will keep the students engaged and let them have more time to work in groups and do hands on activities. The CD for this project will give the students a chance to hear different voices and get a feel for how to read fluently.
My students deserve better.
They deserve better materials. They deserve to read books that don't have torn up pages, writing all over them or even missing pages. They deserve to have newer, more engaging materials that will keep them interested. I want my students to love reading and this is a way to help them do that.
