Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I currently teach first grade in a Chicago Public School. My classroom of twenty-four students usually grunt, and sigh whenever I tell them to get out their science or social studies books. The textbooks that we use are very student friendly, but we do not have the interesting and fun materials to supplement them. I feel that my students would love these subjects if they had an opportunity to try more hands-on activities. One aspect that we focus on in our school is character education. Every month our school focuses on a different character trait. The students have an opportunity to try to win breakfast celebrations with their families if they are the student chosen who has demonstrated the character trait for that month.I feel that the character education books would really give my students an opportunity to learn more about character education, and make them more interested in learning about them. We would use these books every month, dissecting the character traits and learn as much as we can about them in the short amount of time that is dedicated to eaI currently teach first grade in a Chicago Public School. Lastly, I know that my students would really enjoy the interactive map. The map is a great tool for students to understand other countries and cultures around the world.
