My students are bright and hardworking students in an economically disadvantaged Houston high school. Most of my senior students are English language learners who have immigrated to the United States in the last four years (and some of them, even more recently). I've had the opportunity to loop with them which means that I taught them as juniors last year and as sophomores the year before. I also teach many junior students who are either English language learners or students who struggle with reading due to learning disabilities or other problems. They are working every day to learn English and earn their diplomas. This is not an easy task!
My Project
My students need copies of Othello in its No Fear Shakespeare form. This will allow students to read the original Shakespeare play alongside a more easily comprehensible, plain English version. This is so important as many of my students are just learning English. We also need an external DVD drive and the DVD of Othello in order to watch the play as Shakespeare originally intended for it to be watched! We've already gone through 2 ink cartridges this year (which I paid for), and I expect we'll need more as students are working on college essays and applications. Later in the year, my Reading classes will be reading Holes, and we'd like to watch the movie version while reading that book, too.
