Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Because of their disabilities, students with severe challenges come to school with different strengths and limitations. So each student can find success, I propose a multisensory literacy center where students can use different senses to make reading meaningful. The purpose of this project is to expose our students to books and reading in order to develop pre-reading skills. This center will utilize a variety of books to create a powerful literacy experience for each individual student. A multisensory literacy center will increase our students' enjoyment for literature by encouraging them to explore books through their different senses. This program will have a positive impact on our students because it will build on each student's strengths to develop a love for reading while incorporating state learning goals.
Living Books presented on the computer will capture the attention of our multisensory learners. Students take part in learning adventures that strengthen their listening and attending skills. These computer programs provide an easy way to apply the proven principles of visual learning. Our learners will visually attend to the computer screen, touch the mouse to advance the program to the next page, and listen to a story. The sounds from the computer will grab the students' attention. We will use the Living Books software that we already own. We need a notebook computer for students who have difficulty moving their bodies. This small computer allows for special positioning which ensures easy access for all students. This medium will help the students learn the concept of cause/effect and reinforce each student's understanding of simple functional commands used in the classroom community. Through the use of their hands, eyes, and ears, books on the computer offer these students multisensory stimuli.
This project will involve a daily visit to the literacy center where the teacher will read a book aloud to the class. Following the story, the students will explore other books through the computer. Some books will be presented in a Spanish translation. Teachers will observe the children to determine which type of book is most motivating to each student. These observations will be used in the assessment process as well as to build future literacy goals for each student. This program is needed to meet the many needs of students with severe disabilities in accordance with the Illinois Early Learning Standards. Every child can and does learn. Your grant will help children discover, enjoy, and explore books. Thank you for valuing literacy for all children.
