Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What is the value of the 8 in 986? What number comes right before 500? What number has 5 ones, 7 tens, and 3 hundreds? Simple questions for adults but what about for seven year olds learning a new language?
My second grade students are energetic, enthusiastic English Language Learners.
They are hard workers who are making great strides in language development, reading, and mathematics. Our school is a Title 1 school, with 100% participation in the free lunch program. We also are, unfortunately, a Program Improvement 5+ school, which means we need to work really hard to bring up our test scores!
My Project
Making sense of how number systems work is so important for a strong foundation in math. Hands on individual place value charts will be an invaluable resource to help my students develop a deeper understanding of number sense. Also, extra practice through games and puzzles will reinforce the concepts taught.
Please help my students strengthen their understanding of the value of digits, ordering and comparing numbers, reading and writing numbers, and addition and subtraction.
They'll have so much fun using the charts, games, and puzzles that they won't even realize how much they're learning!
