Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Communication is an easy endeavor for most of us. However, for my Chicago Public Dr. Martin Luther King High School students with Autism and moderate to profound disabilities, it is a challenge. My speech and language students love to learn. They are some of the most dedicated and hard working young people that I know.
My students have a wide range of abilities and needs. The one thing that most need, regardless of abilities, is a way to ‘fidget' that is appropriate. As many of you know, many people with special needs move in ways that are repetitive. These repetitive behaviors calm individuals by giving them some ‘sensory' information that they would not get otherwise. Believe it or not, these actions are very calming and/or alerting to these individuals. The only problem is that these calming and alerting repetitive actions interfere with interactions and communication. Most of the time these behaviors are not ‘appropriate' social actions.
In order to maximize communication and appropriate behaviors, my students need items that will give them the sensory input they need without distracting them from the communication task. To do this I am requesting your help in obtaining some ‘fidgets'. These fidgets, that can be held in one's hand or chewed on include: Cheweze pencil toppers, 2 squishy ball sets, an icky ball set, resist a dough, and 2 chewlery necklace and bracelet sets. A visual timer is also needed to set limits on appropriate time intervals to use the items.
We all fidget throughout the day: chew on pens, play with a rubber band, crack our gum, etc. If we need to fidget and are in control of our bodies, imagine what a child with special needs requires. Thanks for helping me to provide my students with 'fidgets' and teaching them how to be more appropriate, on task, and ready to communicate. Thanks for your help!
