One of the most common complaints that I hear as a teacher is... "Why do I need to know about this? I will never use this after school..." By using these magazines the students can see the science in the world around them.
My students live in an area where poverty is a reality for many of them.
Often they cannot see the world outside of our small valley. I want to use these magazines to inspire an attitude of "why does that happen?" and "how does that work?". I want my students to see that science is about asking questions. These magazines are geared towards the adolescent reader so they will be exposed to role models of their own age - that they can relate to. I love that these magazines introduce our impressionable middle-schoolers to teen inventors and engineers. It shows them what people their age can achieve!
My Project
I am requesting 28 subscriptions to Science World magazine. When these magazines are delivered to my classroom I will be able to hold a monthly current events day. We will read the magazines and have discussion groups to analyze how these issues affect us. We will also be able to give countless concrete examples of how science is important to our lives. I can also reference articles to supplement the large range of science topics that I teach throughout the school year.
Also, the more types of careers that I can expose them to through this literature, the more opportunities they will be able to recognize. This magazine is about opening up the world to many students who have never left our county.
By affording the students in my school the opportunity to regularly be exposed to this magazine, it will help to make the world a smaller place for them.
Places that they may never be able to visit will have meaning to them through this opportunity. It will allow me to help take down some of the barriers between my students and the opportunities for their futures.
