My students need STEM kits that will engage them in the Scientific concepts of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. These kits correlate to their current curriculum.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have students who dream of being future NBA greats, doctors, a veterinarian, a teacher, graphic novel illustrators, and computer software designers. While my kids have big dreams, they need help in forging the road to meet those dreams. For many, this means help providing basic school supplies.
Our school is located in a historic neighborhood in a large urban city that has seen better days and unfortunately with crime and poverty rampant in the neighborhood and many of the students in our school are tempted to get involved in the life they see around them in the neighborhood.
We work very hard to engage them in education so they have an opportunity to succeed and do not fall victim to the negative influences around them.
For this reason, our school is piloting a STEAM concept to get district approval for our school to become the first STEAM school in the city. The hands-on approach to learning that STEAM incorporates is engaging and just what our students need to connect to their education.
My Project
The materials selected are hands-on kits related to science, ultimately to STEAM. There is a kit about renewable energy, a technology students can begin learning about and hands-on exploring in 5th grade. Another kit is about magnets and how the magnetic field can be used to harness energy. Yet another kit on snap conductors shows students how to connect conductors to transfer electricity.
There is a hands-on kit of various rocks that students will study and explore how the different types of rocks were formed, as well as see some of the precious materials they hold that we use as resources.
These kits will allow the students to explore science beyond the book, beyond any video, by actually creating their own experiments based on what they observe. They allow for students to be the facilitators in their science education.
