Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Crucial to science education is hands-on involvement: showing, not just telling; real experiments and field trips and not just 'virtual reality.'" - Martin Rees
I teach 5th grade in an urban school district.
The 25 Fifth Grade students in my classroom this year all love learning, at least most of the time. At our school, 94.8% of the students receive free or reduced price lunch. Of the 617 students, 96.6% are minority students.
The school has a vibrant community that loves to get together and celebrate. Around Halloween there is a large parade to show off the beautiful costumes that students wear. On Cinco de Mayo we put on a big festival with crafts made by the students, dances, and games. At the end of the year the school hosts a carnival to celebrate the hard work put in during the school year, with a dunk tank being the most popular activity.
My Project
We need 28 digital scales and two calibration weight kits. My students will use the scales to complete hands on experiments. They will mostly be using the scales to explore the conservation of mass.
One skill my 5th graders are supposed to learn is that the weight of a cup with three rocks inside weighs the same as a cup and three rocks each weighed separately.
While I can tell my students it is true, they will never forget seeing for themselves that conservation of mass is real using our brand new scales.
These scales will allow my students to explore the conservation of mass hands on.
This will not only prepare my students better for our state science test, but will also create life long learners who like exploring with science. Far too many students are not given the opportunity to fall in love with science in its purest form.
