Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Third Grade/Gifted classroom teacher who teaches all subjects including Spanish as a Second Language. Although my class is a gifted class, it is hard to teach Science in particular in a way that is stimulating, exciting and real for my students without the proper materials. It is necessary to have the opportunity to touch, feel, see, hear and even taste (when appropriate) to fully understand Science. Fossils cannot be fully understood without making fossils out of plaster, examining a chicken bone in class and visiting the museum. I taught the life cycle of the butterfly last year using real caterpillars I ordered on-line and insect body parts by buying dead crickets which we examined with magnifying glasses (which we borrowed, by the way). The look on my students' faces was enough to motivate me to continue hands-on lessons as much as possible but, in order to do so we would need the appropriate materials. My school is a fantastic place to work and a great place to learn. Teachers go above and beyond the call of duty to ensure a quality education for our students. However, we are in a low-income part of the city and most of our students come from low income homes and/or have never experienced holding an insect, setting a butterfly free, or dissecting a fish. This is what I want to change. I strongly believe that my class of 26 students and future classes will have a more meaningful experience where they can make personal connections if they can conduct experiments with the proper materials instead of reading a text book. Therefore, as part one of this Making Science Come Alive proposal, I am requesting a collection of Discovery Channel videos where my students can see what we read about in texts--actually see a bird migration, the excavation of fossils, the behavior of insects in their natural environment and species they may never get to see otherwise. This is the first step to lead them to the ultimate hands-on experience.
