Making School Home With Flexible Seating & Crayons
My students need flexible seating- the wobble cushions and the stackable stool. They will need clipboards and an organizer to work this way helping them focus and think.
I have an amazing group of kids! They come from a fairly diverse background with a mix of Hispanic, Native American, Asian, African American, and Caucasian. We live in a rural town in Oklahoma that is in the heart of Cherokee nation. They are strong kids too. They come into school with a lot on their plates and have such bright and caring personalities! They are loving, bold, and persistent each day.
My kiddos are just that- they're my kids and I hope to make our classroom a home away from home for them!
My Project
This project is to help my students find a refuge within my classroom. As my students walk into my classroom everyday they are burdened with things going on in their home lives and then asked to come into school, sit, pay attention, and listen. For some kids that is easier said then done, between worrying about what's happening at home to being underprepared to learn or even not having the ability to focus for extended periods of time.
Flexible seating is sort of magical in this regard: it allows kids who have little control and choice in their lives to have a space of their own!
It can help kids who struggle to control their bodies find balance between movement and work.
This project will provide various means of flexible seating as well as clipboards to help them work at these places, an organizer for clipboards and a cork board to display work they have done! It will also provide us with some other much needed classroom materials- crayons, erasers, and a pencil sharpener!
