With newly drawn district lines recently implemented in my parish this school year, many of my first graders are new to our school. I'm certain that along with excitement for first grade, they have also had feelings of curiosity, nervousness, and maybe even fear of the changes.
My students are definitely high-spirited, eager to learn, and keep me on my toes!
They deserve to have a comfortable, fun, engaging experience in our class, and I intend on providing that for them.
My Project
My first graders have a 15 minute recess each morning. The "playground" for my students' morning recess is an empty field with dirt and a few grassy patches. There are no swings, slides, monkey bars, or play equipment. The only thing my students have to look forward to at recess is the chance to use one of the few jump ropes that our P.E. coach allows our 6 first grade classes to borrow. Unfortunately, this leads to students fighting over jump ropes and eventually sitting down on the sidewalk instead of playing. We want our students moving. We want them to be active. We want their hearts pumping and their muscles working!
I hope that exciting new materials such as the balls and bean bag games will help get my students excited about recess.
I hope that these items will get my students moving, creating games, and playing sports! It truly makes me sad to see these kids sit down at their recess, instead of releasing their energy and practice gross motor skills. Please consider making a donation to our project to help us get active!
