My Students
I teach in a fairly large high school in a rural, farm/nursery town. Many of my students work jobs, as well as, attend school daily and participate in extra-curricular activities. Many of my students work to help their families or to pay for their own expenses.
It is mind-boggling how many students do not have access to great, high interest books.
My goal is to show my students the world through great books! I want my students to be able to use these materials to become better citizens, readers, debaters, and overall better humans just by experiencing the thoughts and feelings of others from around the world.
My Project
With these books, How I Resist, Dear Martin, and The 57 Bus, my students will be able to view the perspective of others while making real world connections. They will read about various methods to make their voices heard in the world we live in today. They will learn about an event from two different sides which will allow students to discuss various moral and ethical issues.
These books will open the students eyes to a world some do not even realize exists.
The books will help guide the students in talks about what matters most in the world we live in today. With these texts, I hope to open up a line of ongoing dialogue about the value of each student as a whole.
