Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from diverse backgrounds and immerse themselves daily in the cultures of their peers through learning two languages (English and Spanish).
Our students strive for academic excellence in both languages in all academic subjects which makes them very unique.
Each child brings something special to the classroom through their experiences and areas of expertise. They make our school an exceptional place to be through their determination to be successful academically while embracing the many cultures that come together within our walls.
My Project
Finding fun and interesting books and curriculum for growing minds isn't always the easiest but currently we have some pretty good books. That being said, providing an engaging learning environment that goes hand in hand with our learning would be the icing on the cake.
Students would greatly benefit from their classroom being transformed into settings from their reading curriculum so that they can be even more excited to read and learn.
If we can bring the classroom to life with different props to match our stories it will make the books that much more engaging. While reading Frindle we can have giant pens hanging from the ceiling, as well as hats with the word Frindle. We can also decorate our classroom like a tropical oasis just as the main character did in his classroom.
During our ecosystems unit, it would be amazing to have different areas of the class represent the various ecosystems we are researching with pictures, animals, plants, etc. These spaces could also be designated work spaces for each group during this unit.
It would also be incredible to have flags of the various Latin American countries that we read about in our We are Latinos unit and also it will help in celebrating the multitude of cultures represented in our classroom.
Lastly, bringing to life the incredible journey and triumphs of Esperanza in Esperanza Rising would be incredible. Students could experience what grape arbors look like, what the various fruits of harvest are, as well as imagine being Esperanza praying for Mama to get well at the washtub grotto.
Never before have students had the opportunity to have their books become real and tangible. This would be the much needed start necessary to give them that experience.
