Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I need your help to bridge the literacy gap! I teach 5th grade Language Arts at a small county school. Our school demographics are about 98% African American, and 95% qualify for free and reduced lunches. Needless to say, we are very short on resources, and as a first year teacher, I am short on resources, too.

Almost all of the students in my class of 24 read below a 5th grade level. Many of them, I'm sad to say, struggle to read at a 2nd or 3rd grade level. Unfortunately this makes reading a chore for most of them -- they have to put so much effort into understanding the words that their comprehension is very low, and reading is not fun for them. However, they love for me to read aloud to them. I've noticed that even my normally boisterous and hard to focus students calm down almost immediately when I crack open a story and start doing the voices. Not only do they enjoy guided reading, but it is a highly effective literacy tool.

I'm planning to transform our school's ill-used study hall at the end of the day into a guided reading hour that will empower my students with the skills, confidence and desire to become lifetime readers. Right now we don't have any classroom sets of books. I'm asking for a class set of Maniac Magee because I think my students will relate to it and be hooked immediately. Just like Jeffrey Magee, many of my students come from broken families and heartbreaking home lives, and we live in a town divide by race and poverty in many of the same ways. I think this book has the power to bring words on a page to life for my students, and I believe that it will teach them valuable lessons about their worth and potential along the way.
