My students need a class subscription to Scholastic News, which provides nonfiction stories and activities to build their background knowledge and skills. Visual support and videos help my ESL students to enjoy learning.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The expression " A picture is worth a thousand words." defines the essence of teaching English as a Second Language. My ESL students would benefit greatly from the visual resources, engaging videos and Common Core aligned lessons in Scholastic News.

My students are English language learners who predominantly come from Spanish speaking homes.

Our elementary school is part of a high poverty suburban school district where many students have limited experiences to help them build their vocabulary and background knowledge. These elements are essential for reading skills especially with the higher demands of the Common Core curriculum. I want my students to feel confident and successful and to break the barriers that can hold them back from success. This year, I will be team teaching with grade 2 and 3 classrooms. The magazines will be used once a week and will be shared by 60 students per grade level as to maximize the investment. The online and visual resources will be utilized via the Smartboard so that all students have access to learning. My students are adorable children who do not always have a fair start in life, but with the right support, they can and will be successful in school and in life.

My Project

Scholastic News contains Common Core aligned, current non-fiction stories that are engaging and interesting to students. They do an excellent job of providing visual resources and videos as well as vocabulary reinforcement so that all children can read and comprehend the material. Kids love Scholastic News because the stories are relevant, the pictures are bright and colorful and the activities and games are fun and educational. As per the new NYS Part 154 regulations, ESL teachers will be coteaching with the classroom teachers. I plan to use the magazines during these periods so the whole class including the ESL students will benefit and increase their reading skills. I will be sharing them with two classes each so a total of about 120 students will benefit from this investment.

This project will improve our students' lives because reading and writing are the cornerstones of education and they need to build up these skills early on.

Kids who read well and have an extensive vocabulary are successful at school, have confidence and are self reliant. These are important qualities for children living in poverty and high crime areas so that they stay focused in school and make positive decisions leading to a better life.
