This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a teacher in a low-income high poverty school, my students are faced with many challenging events in their life. Despite these challenges they look forward to coming to school everyday.
My first grade class are the Super Learners.
They are a great group of students and so eager to learn. Every morning they greet me with a smile and a hug.
My Super Learners are eager to learn to read and become writers and I can't wait to see each one reach their goal this year.
My Project
Decoding is the ability to apply your knowledge of letter-sound relationships, including knowledge of letter patterns, to correctly pronounce written words. Understanding these relationships gives children the ability to recognize familiar words quickly and to figure out words they haven't seen before. Although children may sometimes figure out some of these relationships on their own, most children benefit from explicit instruction in this area.
Phonics is one approach to reading instruction that teaches students the principles of letter-sound relationships, how to sound out words, and exceptions to the principles.
My students will be able to work on these skills independently during center time and become better readers and writers.
