This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come from diverse backgrounds in the city of Philadelphia. 99 percent of my students come from low income households. My classroom is a regular education classroom with some special needs children, as well. My children are enthusiastic and eager to learn, but like many kindergarteners, they have a variety of learning styles and each child learns at their own pace.
Literacy instruction is a big part of our day and learning to read is such an exciting time!
By the end of the year the growth they show is remarkable. The year-long journey is incredible!
My Project
Learning to read is not always easy and it can seem like an overwhelming task, but learning can be made easier and fun! Kindergarteners learn best through hands-on experiences. The Alphabet Sound Teaching Tubs will allow my children to explore letter sounds, sort manipulatives, play memory games and build vocabulary skills.
Phonics is such an important component of learning to read and by making it interesting and exciting, children will more readily grasp the skills they need.
The tubs can be used as part of small group guided reading instruction as well as being used at center time, in a variety of different ways.
I am hoping to use these tubs as a motivational tool to help with reading instruction in my kindergarten classroom.
