My students love hands-on learning using manipulatives. They enjoy using art materials to practice pre-reading and writing skills. They are learning to print letters and numerals, write sight words and letters/sounds. My kids really love to learn in creative ways!
My Project
My students will become very engaged in learning letters, sight words and other literacy skills with these creative manipulative materials. They will use the scented markers and watercolors to write their letters/words in a multisensory way. They will use the slate boards to write responses to group games in a new and interesting fashion. They will form letters and words with playdough to make the letters/words come alive. When young children use all their senses to explore manipulatives, their learning soars and they remember what they have learned much better. My 29 students are all learning via ZOOM with me each day. Since they are not in the regular classroom setting, they do not have access to manipulative learning materials, such as magnetic letters, watercolors, bingo daubers, etc. These materials will be used to create take-home packets for my students to use as we work together via ZOOM to create letters and words in multi-sensory ways, such as forming letters with playdough or writing sight words on magnadoodles. Young children must learn through concrete objects, nit just more "screen time". Once the children receive their take-home packets, I will teach the parents via LOOM how to help their children use these materials to help them practice making CVC words, writing sight words, printing letters properly, etc. Most of my students do not have learning materials like these at home and would only have the opportunity to do so if they were in the school setting. During this pandemic, my childrens' families do not want to send them to school, so this project would impact their achievement greatly.
