My students need a carpet, bookshelf, and books for a deescalation space in our classroom where they can practice self-regulation while managing stress, frustration, and other feelings.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We live in a rural area where most students receive free-reduced lunches. My students are adventurous, inquisitive, and unique individuals that love to learn! In order to provide them with a safe and secure environment a safe place in the classroom is necessary. Many of the students in our school have experienced some type of tragedy or trauma in their lives. When they walk through the door of the classroom everyday they don't leave everything at the door.
Providing them with an area that has been designated to help them recognize and work through the emotions they are feeling is one of my goals for the upcoming school year.
My Project
Research suggests that social and emotional development is just as important to children's learning as their academic development. I want to create an environment that enables children to become problem solvers. The requested bookshelf, books, and rug will really bring the safe area to life!
The safe area will give students time and space to manage their emotions.
Creating safe space for reflection is vital when trying to build the capacity to teach them how to react when they feel angry, sad, or frustrated. Making peace in kindergarten and empowering my students to identify and communicate their own feelings is the main goal of this project.
