Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. About 30% of our students came from Puerto Rico after Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria. Many are being raised in single-parent households and, based on their socioeconomic status, qualify for free lunch. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical".
My students are creative, clever, and very spontaneous.
They like to move, they love to read, and love lots of positive attention. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to provide them with the skills necessary to keep pace in today's high stakes learning environment. From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day.
My Project
My students would like to be able to print their projects out and make them into display boards to present to the rest of the class.
For several weeks now, we have used tablets to enhance our curriculum and create a more learner-centered learning environment for everyone.
My students have been using one-note to collaboratively create projects based on books, and other curriculum. My students have asked me over and over to print their projects, and take pictures to send to mom and dad, but unfortunately our school does not have the resources to allow us to print these materials. Many of my students are from Puerto Rico, and were displaced after Hurricanes Irma and Maria, so they rarely have access to technology at home beyond a cell phone.
A color printer would allow us to print out our projects and create display boards so we can show everyone else in the class, and in the school, what we are learning. It would also help my students enjoy their interactive notebooks much more. Please help me show my students that the world is not black and white, and add some color to our classroom!
