Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are a microcosm of this great country's diversity: 3,200 students and more than 45 languages spoken among them.
We are a struggling urban district, ironically in one of the wealthiest counties in the country.
The students try to do more with less, without complaint.
My journalism classes -- Journalism I and II -- have been combined and we work together to learn about journalism and then apply these new skills to real-world situations because they are producing content for our website.
Many students take the course because they know it will force them out of their comfort zone. For instance, shy students have to overcome their shyness to report, to interview, to set up meetings. Students who have trouble with time management suddenly have to adapt to stringent deadlines. They have to work with student editors and their adviser (me) to solve problems that come up daily, just like a real newsroom.
Many of my students plan to pursue a communication or journalism major in college, and are using this course to prepare. They do a great job of disseminating news around campus.
My Project
Our digital news platform has come a long way since we launched it a few years ago. Our reporting, writing, and layouts have progressively become more sophisticated. One area, however, that keeps holding us back is the quality of our photographs.
We do not have a professional-level camera to help us produce top-quality work on the website.
Students routinely use their smart phones to illustrate our stories, and all stories, even briefs, must be illustrated on a digital platform. Often the quality of the photo just doesn't match the quality of the article.
This camera will allow the staff to take high-quality photos, something that they can take pride in and show off while trying to drive traffic to the website.
