Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
For some students, MUSIC is that one subject that can get them through school, the one subject where they feel like they can excel, be creative, and achieve their goals. At our inner-city, low-income school, students have found a home in the music room and with the music program.
The students at our large elementary school are very dedicated to their music program.
They are so dedicated that two years ago we were able to begin a 5th grade concert band program. No student is turned away. This program not only teaches them how to read music and play an instrument, but also helps to develop social skills and sense of responsibility.
The first year of the program, there were 84 students in the concert band. This group played for special guests at the school, performed concerts for family and friends, marched in a parade while playing their instruments, and were loved so much they were asked to play on a television show!
Being in an older school, space was limited last year when it came to storing the instruments and folders. This year our program is thriving in its second year and has grown to include 98 students! Trying to organize the general music room (since there's no band room) so there is enough space is difficult!
My Project
Students are not allowed to keep their band music folders and instruments in their own classrooms because the classes are so large and there are so many students in band. Organizing enough space to fit and safely store their folders and music in the music room is almost impossible. The students are constantly getting their folders and music ripped and misplaced because they can only set their folders on top of where their instruments are placed.
With a folio cabinet the students will be able to safely put their folder in the music room and know exactly where to go to get it. Handing out music to the students will be much easier as well. When handing out notices and music, these items can be placed right into the students' slots and will make being in this band program much more manageable.
With your generosity, my students will be able to rest easier knowing that their music is safe and they will concentrate more on their own instruments.
This program teaches the students responsibility, but the students cannot be responsible for folders that don't fit into the room. These students will get a better sense of what it's like to be in a band program that is well-developed. Students are only as good as the resources they're given. You can help these students with your donations!
