This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are from the far southeast side of Chicago with high hopes, dreams, and the drive to be successful. My 8th grade students have worked extremely hard to build up their grades and make it into selective enrollment high schools. They strive to be positive role models in our community, which makes them deserving of this and much more.
In my artroom, my students crave to try new art techniques and work with a large variety of mediums.
They are very engaged in constructing meaning within their work, and love to learn about history and science in my class as inspiration for their artwork.
My Project
My 8th graders came to me at the beginning of this year and told me they wanted to create a legacy project. They wanted to create a large mural in the school highlighting the importance of character and academics. The materials we have requested: paint, canvases, and a large canvas roll, will be used to help my 8th grade class achieve this. My students will work together to create a theme, and then design large paintings and a hanging mural to paint and permanently display in our school. We are requesting enough canvases so that every student can actively participate throughout the entire process. This will truly be a whole-class effort.
My students will have to consider their audience, the message they want to send, and their own capabilities.
They will need to create several prototypes, and develop skills in compromise and leadership as they democratically choose the direction to take their mural. They will encounter difficulties as they work on a large scale, and they will have to problem-solve to move forward when things don't go as planned. They have never worked on a large scale like this before, and they are so excited to try it!
