Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a speech-language pathologist, I work with students in pre-k through 6th grade. My elementary school is in a high poverty/low income district in a small neighborhood outside of Oklahoma City.
Many of my students face challenges of poverty and other difficult circumstances at home, in addition to meeting the demands of school.
Continued state budget cuts have made it difficult for schools to provide the resources necessary for student success. My students continue to impress me with their resilience and willingness to face academic and other challenges on a daily basis.
My students require special support services to improve their speech, language, and overall communication skills. Our activities are also designed to support language and literacy development.
My Project
I want my students to take ownership of their learning and understand their role in the global community.
I am requesting classroom organization supplies, a globe and map, and literacy materials, in order to transform my classroom into a special place for learning.
Each of my students has an individualized education plan (IEP). The heavy duty folders and pocket charts will allow each of my students to have their own pocket for storing materials. They will be able to see, store, and access their materials independently. These pocket charts will make it easy for students to keep track of their projects.
Many of my students do not have the resources to travel and explore other cultures and countries. Having access to a globe and map will allow them to have a hands on learning experience that will complement their understanding of the world.
My students have literacy and language difficulties. The Intensive Phonological Awareness (IPA) Program is an evidence-based program that will allow my students to develop important skills, such as the ability to analyze the sound structure of language. This skill is critical for students who struggle with reading.
The timer will help us stay on task and learn time-management skills. The stickers will be used to reward my students' hard work!
