Hurricane Sandy swept through my student's community and destroyed or heavily damaged each of their homes. They lost everything! As they told me their stories, a common loss among them were all of their family pictures and photo albums. Our goal is to recreate these albums with new memories!
My students live in a small coastal community heavily damaged by Hurricane Sandy.
Our school services 300 students, grades Pre-K to 8th. Our test scores are tops in the district and our teachers are hard-working and dedicated. Both of our administrators were previous teachers in the school and we are a close-knit staff as a result. The minute you enter our school you feel the love!
My fourth grade class of 24 is sweet and kind. They love to read our novels each day on our class rug and write in their journals each day. Our class chart that tallies "random acts of kindness" is sticker-filled. Our room is always colorfully decorated and filled with creative student work. Visitors to our class are intrigued by their spirit and zest for learning!
Everything was great, until Hurricane Sandy hit. Our community was destroyed, our possessions were lost, families were relocated. Many teachers and students were homeless, and our school flooded. My photo album project wants to help my students recreate lost pictures and photo albums.
My Project
My photo album project will help my students replace the flood-damaged pictures and photo albums that many lost. We will reach out to family and friends to request duplicate family photos. We will take new photos in our class to create new memories. We will include written memoir pieces along with our photos to help the students express their feelings and ideas about their families portrayed in the photos. This project will help my students recover emotionally from the storm's damage to their lives. This photo album project will be ongoing throughout the school year and we will present our albums to our parents in the Spring. These albums will be treasured for a lifetime and be a remembrance of a tough period in their young lives that they survived. Help me... help them. Donate a photo album to one of my students! We will dedicate each book to each donor. What a nice way to make a difference!
Your donation will be a gift that keeps on giving!
Each time this photo album is opened and the dedication page displays your name, your kindness will be remembered. I can't think of a better way to pay-it-forward. Please consider our worthy project!
