Learning Mandarin Chinese can be a daunting task, but my students have signed up, in many cases for 2 or 3 years, to take on that challenge and are excelling at picking up the language. Mandarin is a new course offering in my district, and there are already over 150 students who are learning this exciting, important language. My students are curious and inquisitive, and are eager to learn new words and phrases, and learn more about Chinese culture.
My students come from diverse linguistic and ethnic backgrounds, and many of them have no experience with Mandarin or Chinese culture outside of my classroom.
They come to my classroom for a variety of reasons, but most come to learn Mandarin because they want to create connections with friends, family, or people on the other side of the globe they haven't met yet.
My Project
Learning Mandarin Chinese is more than just about speaking the language and writing the characters. Exposing my students to real Chinese culture is an important part of my teaching. I have bought items for traditional and still-popular Chinese games, such as Mahjong and the "jianzi," a Chinese hacky sack-like game.
The products that this project will help me purchase will go a long way to providing my students with authentic cultural experiences.
In addition to Chinese games, this project will also help me to decorate my classroom with exciting and eye-catching items, and will give me culturally relevant prizes to give out to students during class. I believe that by experiencing first-hand what Chinese people do, see, and use, I can engage my students to want to learn more about this fascinating language and culture that is all too often reduced to a few stereotypes about kung fu and fortune cookies.
