My students need ways to be able to sit in their seats during a lesson and be able to move to get out their energy so they can concentrate on what is being taught.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
They are dreamers, thinkers, talkers, and questioners.
They are mini inspirations to themselves and others around them, even if they don't know it yet. They are budding ambassadors, world travelers, scientists, entrepreneurs, and teachers. They are our future and I want to give them a great start to their long, successful career.
My Project
One of the problems I faced the most in my last school year was trying to keep my students in their seats, over this summer I have been researching the difference selective seating can have on students who are overactive to help them concentrate on what is being taught. My goal this year is to test out flexible seating and give my students more options on where they can sit in the classroom. I'm super excited to see how it goes on the classroom this year and see how it will make a difference in the students who need it the most.
the hardest thing was watching students who really wanted to be successful not being able to focus because their mind will not let them.
I have also added pencil bags to help the students have more responsibility over their belongings (especially pencils), dry erase pockets and erasers to complete independent work with less waste .
I am also very excited to have a moveable dry erase board so that I can teach my small group lessons without taking up my larger board and distracting other students completing their independent work.
