Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The majority of the students at my school live in poverty. Going to school provides safety, meals, education, belonging and music education. There are opportunities for parents to learn English, computer skills and ways to help their children be successful in school. Music education is an important piece of their educational experience. The situation created by the COVID-19 virus has created educational, financial and emotional strains on these children and their families. Music and music education touches their hearts, helps them listen, and improves their reading and language acquisition. The children are hungry to learn. And they love music.
My Project
Making music together touches both the creative intellectual needs as well as our need to be with, connect with and make music together with others. Music is an essential part of our culture and a child's education. In order to follow the COVID-19 protocols, students remain in their homeroom classrooms all day. At this time, students do not experience music education in the music room where there are instruments. I have to travel to their classroom without instruments.
There is a way to put instruments into the hands of children and follow COVID-19 safety protocols; this is where I need your help.
One of the easiest instruments to play is the drums. Frame drums allow students to read and perform from written music. They do not take up space like the larger drums that sit on the floor. Frame drums are exactly what you might think they are: 2 inch wide frames with 14 inch diameter drum heads attached, large enough to stand on your lap, thin enough to store in boxes or crates. The synthetic drum head is easy to clean to keep everyone safe.
Our digital curriculum, MusicPlay, has lessons and instructional videos to teach students many different ways to play the Frame Drums. We need a class set of drums that can be cleaned between classes and reused.
