The keiki at our school are the most thoughtful and considerate humans I've ever had the opportunity to work with. Despite all the adversity they face on a daily basis, they come to school with an upbeat attitude and are ready to learn. While we canʻt be face-to-face right now, our kids "come to school" by putting on their uniform, brushing their hair, and logging into morning meetings with us.
Students are all eager to come back to school and perform together again.
While I may not be able to give them a clear answer as to when we can actually do that, it inspires me to give them everything I can to ensure their musical growth while we are apart.
At my school, 78.7% of the student population lives in economic hardship, while the state's average falls at about 47%.
Nearly 15% of the students are considered homeless. Despite these shocking statistics, the students here show more love and creative potential than I've ever seen in my life. I am welcomed with endless smiles, greetings, and hugs when I walk onto campus every morning. The positive environment at my school provides our students the opportunity to strive for excellence
My Project
I am wanting to create take home music packets for my lower elementary students. By giving students a pair of rhythm sticks, they will have the ability to not just listen to a rhythm but recreate it with their own instrument. Students will also receive a scarf in the packet for our online music lessons.
This year has been challenging for everyone and I want to keep my students creatively engaged by putting items physically in their hands.
These materials are to be used at home for now, but should we return to face to face learning then the students would bring the materials back to school. Since we will be unable to share materials any time in the near future, I want to make sure my students have the ability to experience and create music wherever they are learning from.
