My students need electronic piano keyboards and headphones to tap into their musical potential while at the same time, reinforcing good work behavior.

My amazing students are brilliant, kind, and loving. They are also on the Autism Spectrum. They are diagnosed as having Severe Autism and are considered to be non-verbal. They are learning how to communicate using devices while continuing to work on verbalizing if able. This can cause frustration for these lovely children. There is so much that they want to say, but finding a way to let others know what they want or feel is hard! This frustration can sometimes lead to behavior problems and, sometimes, giving up and losing the motivation to try "one more time".
I have to find a way to motivate my students to learn until they can find motivation in themselves.
If the students have something amazing to work towards, then they are more inclined to take risks and complete their work.
My students are HIGHLY motivated by music and sound. They are drawn to musical toys in our room. The electronic piano keyboards (with colored keys) will tap into their love of music and sound, and will also MOTIVATE them to have good work behavior.
Many of my students want to learn how to communicate, but it is extremely difficult for them. This can cause them to often feel like giving up, and not wanting to even try because of the fear of failure. This can lead to behavior difficulties in their attempt to avoid work. If there is a "high interest" item for them to work towards, then they are more willing to take a risk and complete a lesson. These color coded piano keyboards are of "high interest" to all of my students.
The students would be highly motivated to complete their work to earn time on a piano keyboard, so both their behavior AND their time on task would improve.
My students would be able to match the colors from a song book to the colors on the keyboard and actually be able to play music. For some of the students, color recognition and matching are actual IEP goals, so they will also be learning as they play.
Music is so highly motivating to all students, especially those students on the Autism Spectrum. It is how I teach them so many concepts and to encourage use of their voice (or voice approximations) as they sing along. I have students in my class who have a gift for music and sound. I am excited when I think about how my students will blossom as they learn how to play music. I would like to have a mini concert at our Holiday Party on December, and again at our End of Year party on May.
