Our school has heart! That is our school's unofficial motto because the faculty and families are truly a family. We don't operate strictly on a professional basis, but we consider each other as whole humans and treat each other as such. Our students come to school full of enthusiasm and love to share unique stories from their experiences. Our students come from a wide range of backgrounds. Some are more fortunate than others, and so we help one another. There isn't one word or category that fits every student. They all bring their special gifts and talents...especially to music class!
My Project
Students will use apps such as Garage Band, Toca Band, and Edjing to work collaboratively, create, and share their learning. Garage Band gives students a tool to aurally identify and create rhythmic and melodic patterns. It also gives them the ability to arrange music of varying complexity with others. Similarly, Toca Band enables students to arrange music and collaborate with others. This app is also useful in allowing students to practice identifying and categorizing ostinato. Edjing will be used to study techniques used in differing types of music. Students can then create mash-ups of music from today and other time periods.
Even though students use their hands, feet, voices, and/or instruments to practice new skills in Music class, the addition of iPads would invigorate their curiosity and offer new opportunities.
Each person learns in multiple ways. Students who connect through technology will benefit from the use of iPads. I keep class exciting and incorporate movement as often as possible, but with all the fun sometimes it's easy to forget that students take an end of the year exam based on their music skills. This exam in important for the students and for our school. iPads would help students to learn in different ways and keep them engaged.
We all want our children to develop into kind and happy adults. Music class is important because it teaches an art form, cultures, connects students, and allows students to be successful in a nonacademic way. When the test comes around, the students don't deserve to be caught off guard. They need every chance to succeed and be supported in their learning. iPads would be a valuable tool for the music classroom.
