With large classes, outdated textbooks, and low socioeconomic climate, teaching theater arts in our Title I district is increasingly challenging. Due to these factors, funding for creative classrooms is nonexistent. My textbooks are 15 years old, I don't have a full class set, and I teach drama with very limited resources. My students, predominantly Native American, seem to take all this in stride.
My students are extremely creative, boisterous teenagers that have amazing talent.
By the time they are in Theatre Arts II, they all seem like family, and as in all families, we have our struggles both emotional and financial. One of the financial struggles results in having few resources, a problem that I hope I can help solve with your help.
Creativity runs rampant in my classroom. I have actors, lighting technicians, costumers, and scenic artists. My teens seem to thrive on our hands-on projects, as well as our scene work.
My Project
Last year I challenged my students to write their own plays that addressed important social issues. Honestly, they did great, most of them chose to address bullying since we were in a school environment. The problems didn't start until it was time to record all the scenes, each group was required to have three different scenes in their play multiply that by six groups and that's a lot of time recording. This project took too long to complete because we only had one camera and that one I had to borrow.
We desperately need video recording equipment so my students will be able to complete their social issues script projects in a reasonable time frame.
They had so much fun and learned so much from this project!
This project will require them not only to write and record their plays but they will also be required to download and edit their plays into a movie. I have access to the computers to complete the last part of the project. I just need your HELP acquiring the recording equipment!
I'm requesting three new video cameras, three 64GB flash memory cards, three tripods, and a professional lavalier microphone so my students can really show off their talents and produce creative and informative movies that can impact our students in our high school.
