This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The challenges of Common Core are here and my students are ready to rise to the occasion. How can we make sure they're ready? We can be sure by giving them all the materials, ideas and information they need to become critical thinkers and well-educated citizens. My students are loving, excitable and motivated learners!
They come to school each day ready and willing to do anything they can to get ready for COLLEGE even though they're only in first grade.
No goal is too big and no expectation is too high for them, which makes coming to school each day a pleasure. My students have developed a love for math! We go from the basics of shapes and counting, through measurement and data and into place value, addition and subtraction. When my students leave first grade they are ready for 2nd grade! My students are willing to try and to learn anything and everything which is what makes teaching them a pleasure each and every day.
My Project
I believe that students learn best when they are the ones who are truly doing the work. By having students touch, manipulate and describe what they see and do, it provides a solid foundation for their learning.
These hands-on manipulatives and math games will give my students the chance to not only see math on paper, but provide opportunities for them to regroup, decompose and represent their thinking in a concrete way.
Having a calendar to review fluency skills daily, a large number line to show how skip counting, addition and subtraction work and magnets that can be used to demonstrate place value concepts will all give me the opportunity to provide students with a strong model that they can use to practice independently.
We will be digging into many new concepts in second grade that require students to think critically and explain their answers, and this is the first step to mastery. With these math tools, there will be no barriers to learning and all students will be able to access the content at all times.
