My students are creative, hungry to learn, excited to be at school and full of wonder! They yearn for opportunities of hands-on, active, tangible type assignments where they can conduct some discovery learning in math. They come to school each day ready to learn and hungry to use manipulatives.
My students are from diverse economic and cultural backgrounds which only adds to the excitement of learning daily in the classroom.
Many students didn't know any English when first coming to our school in Kindergarten. It is magical to watch math be a common language.
My Project
Students need to be able to touch and manipulate coins as a crucial part of learning. Identifying coins and money with tangible items not only allows students to meet state standards, but helps them to build a more concrete understanding and to become more financially literate individuals in society.
The use of the tangible objects and games allows students to become fluid with values of coins, strengthen addition and subtraction skills using real world situations and more.
Research states the importance of students having the ability to touch something concrete before moving to representational (pictures) and then moving into the abstract.
