This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at a Title I high school in Jacksonville, Florida. I am taking over the yearbook program for the coming school year. I have recruited 25 intelligent, charismatic, hardworking students to take on the task of turning around a program that is in shambles to make create a quality, 200 page production that will be an authentic depiction of life at our school. These are students that show up to school every day with a smile on their face ready to show the world they are not defined by their current situation, but by their dedication to education and self improvement.
My Project
As a third year teacher, I've fallen in love with the students and staff of WHS. I have taken on the task of advising students with the 2019-2020 yearbook. The problem is we currently have 1 digital camera and 1 memory card for a year book staff of 25 to 30 students! While the ultimate goal would be to have a digital camera for every student to utilize, we are starting small! The previous yearbook advisor relied on students using their cellphones to capture images. The issue with this is that many students at our school don't have access to cellphones that can take quality images.By expanding to 4 cameras, with 20 megapixel quality, it will allow multiple students to go to events around the school and provide coverage for our publication. While it's not important that each student has their own camera, I do believe it's important for each student to have their own memory card to organize the photos that they capture for our yearbook. Through the creation of yearbook students will learn an assortment of 21 century skills that can be applied throughout their lives. Students will learn the basics of photography, journalism, interviewing, marketing, advertising, and editorial work. I hope to expose students to subjects that they may otherwise not be exposed to. All help will be appreciated.
