Hi! I teach second grade on the South Side of Chicago in an area of high poverty. Math is one of the most pressured times of the day because I am desperately trying to bring my students on level. The majority of my students entered knowing how to do only simple addition up to 4 + 5= 9. By the end of the year, if all goes well, they will be carrying and borrowing double digit numbers, counting money and making change, telling time, estimating and measuring, interpreting graphs and doing word problems. It's a big goal, but that is where they need to be in order to be successful in third grade. Luckily, you can help! To be as strategic as possible, I want to implement two to three days of math centers a week. This way, I can place students at the area where they are having trouble and meet all of the students?needs at the same time. This will also help me to push the students who are picking up math very easily and support the ones that are having a very hard time. We have too far to go still to waste any instructional time. Please help me make math as effective and efficient as possible. This proposal is one of a series asking for parts of a second grade math center.
